"INDIE PICK OF THE MONTH - As inviting as a hometown concert by a local band, this album's non-sterile approach to sound beckons to the comfort zone found only within the village limits. A sweet little gem off the beaten path"

what's a boy to do
MP3
every once in a while a melody just pops into my head. and for some strange reason, it often happens when i'm out riding my motorcycle. this one popped into my head and all i had to do was go home and write it out.

just like "what's a boy to do" except that this melody was in my head for a long time before i committed it to paper and then (we used to say vinyl, but now what?) ... i used to sing the chorus while riding around town. as soon as i got off the bike, the melody was gone. one day i got off the bike, went to a pay phone, and called my answering machine and sang the melody. the tape on the answering machine was so old that it took me a while to fogure out what i was singing.
money to burn based on a true story! a few years ago i worked at a small internet startup company. the owner/founder was a reasonably wealthy man (as was his father). he burned through about 30 million dollars in two years before the company vanished. to be fair, he is a very nice man, and had a great idea, which was just a few years ahead of it's time. the lyrics are based on events that were discussed, but did not actually happen. for example, we had a meeting where we discussed the best way to roll out the product. one person thought it would be a great idea to have "a thousand butterflies" flying in the convention hall. my take on this was simple "what happens when they die?"

based on a dream i had. i was flying through the sky on a blue sheet. i decided to describe central park in this song. i used to compete in triathlons and spent a fair amount of time in the park. i tell audiences that this is an aerial tour of central park. with one exception being the "promenade" which is in fact in brooklyn heights, a few blocks from where i live. the melody in the chorus is a little trick i decided to use. i was still working on the song while i was on vacation with my younger brother, sitser in law and neice. my neice (shawn-alexander) wanted to go out and play. i asked her to wait a minute so i could practice the song "one more time". she was very patient and sat and listened to the song (for the umteenth time) and then off we went. later than night she was standing outside of a restaurant singing it. it amazed me how a 4 year old could remember, much less sing that song after hearing it only a few times.

not much to write about this one. written for a girlfriend (now ex) about how the relationship could work. it didn't, and looking back, i'm quite thankful. the original arrangement had lots of synths and electric guitars on it. the arrangement here is thanks to the hard work of both eric liljestrand and paul e mitchell. we were forced to do an acoustic show and they came up with the beginning and ending sections.

all of the really great relationships i have had have started out with one amazing night. i'm not talking about sex (although that is pretty amazing) but about spending a night talking. this song is about such a night. it happened in boston in august. there was an electrical storm outside, which gave her a horrible headache. there were also some "jumping beans" in my hotel room which she said sounded like "gerbils in heat". this song is one of my favorites because of the magic of that night and how much i adored this woman.
emptiness this song was written quite a few years ago. besides being a bit sad, it has a very nice ebow section on it (4 bows).
don't ask, don't tell this is about the flight 800 plane crash. as my older brother says, it's another one of my "conspiricy songs". the lyrics tell you the way i see it. "start the investigation, but slowly, very slowly"
always a very quiet way to end the CD.
