Adams & Tillary (the easy solution)
Complex problems require complex solutions.
For those of you have been following my rant about the changes at Tillary and Adams Street, you know the DOT made some complex changes (scroll down). They wanted to give pedestrians more time to cross the street. That makes sense. But their solution broke a traffic pattern that had been in existence for decades, and had been working for that long. And according to many people who live in Concord Village, the DOT solution is not exactly working.
So here's my solution. And it's not only not complex, it's (as many of my friends would say) stupid easy. None of the other intersections are timed to go off with the Tillary and Adams intersection. So you don't have to worry about changing the timings on that corner. So why not just make all the light intervals LONGER! Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't this the easy solution that should have been tried to begin with?

Letter to the Editor

As a member of the Transportation & Safety Committee of Community Board 2, I am the person who brought the resolution to ask the DOT to go back to the drawing board. The resolution passed (7 in favor, 2 opposed). I thought I should explain why I am opposed to the current plan. I write this is a private citizen, and I am not speaking for the Committee. To begin with, this is a major change in traffic patterns in a heavily traveled part of Brooklyn, The plan, I was told, was never brought to the community for discussion. It was brought to the Transportation & Safety Committee of Community Board 2. I was shocked at how little real planning DOT had done. For example, they estimate that 275 cars an hour go up Clinton Street to the Brooklyn bridge. They expect exactly half to turn left onto Cadman Plaza, and the other half to turn left onto Jay Street. They told us this would happen on its own. No study, just a wild guess. They did not take into consideration the traffic currently on either Cadman Plaza or Jay Street. On Cadman Plaza there is always a backup where cars exiting the Brooklyn Bridge are heading to the BQE. On Jay Street cars and bicyclists are exiting the Manhattan Bridge. This is already a dangerous intersection now made much worse. Several people on the committee estimated that it will take an additional 5 minutes to get onto the Brooklyn Bridge from Clinton Street now. This will cause more pollution, more congestion and more potential accidents - not less as the DOT states. When the public, in a stakeholders meeting, was told about the plan, it was basically a done deal.
Another major change is forcing traffic to turn left onto Joralemon Street instead of on Tillary. This is another situation where the DOT did not think it through. Tour buses regularly made a left from Adams onto Tillary to get to Fulton Ferry landing. Now they are going to turn left at Joralemon (another heavily traveled street already). Will it work? The DOT says it should work and that they'll watch it for 6 months. Is this really how a major traffic change is supposed to happen? Throw your hands into the air and say "let's see what happens if we do this?"
Councilman Yassky is correct to say that pedestrian safety is important. But by causing more traffic, more pollution, and more potential accidents, is this really a good and properly thought out plan? It's politically correct to say that we are glad that DOT are trying. But I would ask this question: is a poorly thought out plan, that causes more problems that it corrects, worthy of any praise at all? In essence, is a bad and dangerous plan better than none at all? I would say "no". This is a flawed plan and the pilot program should be ended as soon as possible. The DOT should gather the stakeholders and ask what they want and give them options. They did not do that, and that is why this plan is so flawed.

Adams and Tillary
This is what they plan to do. No more left turns off Tillary onto the bridge. Hmmm... So what are the taxi's going to do? What are all the other drivers going to do? Drop your jaw now.
They expect the drivers to split into two groups. One group (half) making a left onto Cadman Plaza West, and driving past the traffic coming off the Brooklyn Bridge (and heading for the BQE), which is heavy most of the day and night. And continuing to Sands Street (which is very narrow and already congested). Brilliant!
The other half (it will be more like 80%) will go right by the entrance, shake their heads and fists and scream something obscene (like "what the ...") and make a left at Jay Street. Some of them will make a u-turn, because the entrance is RIGHT THERE! Others will continue on Jay Street and pass the drivers and CYCLISTS exiting off the Manhattan Bridge (good for cyclists - keeps them on their toes, and possible on the pavement waiting for EMT). Once they get by that traffic mess, they can make a left on Sands and get on the bridge.
This is the plan from hell! Whoever thought it up needs to find a new job. I have not been able to find one elected official who is for the plan. The Transportation and Public Safety Committee of CB2 voted to ask the NYCDOT to go back to the drawing board because they thought the plan was horrible (the vote was 7 yes, 2 no, 1 abstention). Even residents of Concord Village who initially asked for more time to cross the street are baffled. Now they can't even drive into Concord Village without having to pass it first.
I've seen a lot of foolish things in this city, and this is in the top 10.
But what can you do? Call 311 when it goes into affect (on June 7th) and tell them to take it down.
Call your elected officials and ask them to please speak up about this (which should be easy, since none of them like the plan). Don't call to yell at them, call them and tell them how you feel. None of them like the plan. You will help them when they go public. They can say "the calls we are getting are overwhelming against this plan".

New Plaza for Downtown Brooklyn?
The Department of Transportation announced that it intends to test a pedestrian plaza in Downtown Brooklyn.
Moving south on Adams Street, the strip will start just past the Brooklyn Marriott on Adams Street and turn east on Willoughby Street ending at Pearl Street.
